I chose to create a diorama about the atrocities and genocide that are occurring in Darfur. The main conflict in that region is the Sudanese military and the Janjaweed (an Arab militia group) fighting against rebel groups including the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement. The government of Sudan has being censoring the media and altering reports to downplay the great tragedy that is occurring. War rape is being used against women and children on a daily basis in Sudan to terrorize the local peoples. This conflict has been credited with up to 2 million deaths and 4 million displaced persons. The women and children of Sudan are being forced to live in refugee camps that are ill-equipped and extremely dangerous. Thankfully, as of July 18, 2008, the International Criminal Court filed charges of war crimes against the president, Omar al-Bashir. He is charged with 3 counts of genocide, 5 counts of crimes against humanity and 2 counts of murder and will be tried in an international court following his arrest.
